Match Day Prep: What to Expect & How to Get Ready

Table of Contents

Match Day is a huge milestone for medical students—and their families. It’s exciting, nerve-wracking, and for many, the start of moving to a new city for residency. If you’re a medical student matching in 2026, a physician spouse, or planning a relocation for residency, here’s what to expect and how to prepare.

Hi, I’m Amanda Barron—physician spouse, relocation specialist, and your go-to friend for real talk about life in medicine. I’ve been through Match Day, celebrated it, and helped dozens of physician families relocate smoothly. Here’s my personal guide to making it a little less stressful.

What Is Match Day?

  1. When: Every March (usually near St. Patrick’s Day)
  2. How it works: Fourth-year med students rank residency programs, programs rank applicants, and a computer matches you.
  3. The day: Students open envelopes in a countdown—exciting, emotional, sometimes surprising.

Tip for partners & spouses

Celebrate! Even if it’s not your dream program, the city or hospital won’t define your journey—it’s the community you build that matters most.

Before Match Day

Celebrate milestones

Take time to acknowledge all the hard work that brought you here.

Talk “what ifs”

Have a backup plan so you’re not scrambling if things don’t go as expected.

After Match Day: Next Steps

Once you know your program, the next phase begins: relocating, planning, and preparing for residency.

Week 1–2: Learn Your New City

  1. Join local Facebook groups or online communities for your hospital or city. Example: Nashville Physician Spouses or Vanderbilt House Staff Alliance.
  2. If you’re a parent, check local moms groups, schools, and childcare communities.
  3. Research neighborhoods, commute times, and lifestyle options online.

Week 2: Logistics & Budget

  1. Book movers or a rental truck early—it’s a busy season for relocation.
  2. Set a moving budget: movers, utilities, pet boarding, new household needs. Factor in any relocation stipend from your program.

Week 3: Housing Decisions

  1. Rent vs. Buy:
  2. Short-term (<3 years) → Rent
  3. Long-term (>4 years) → Consider buying (or investing in a rental property for future residents)
  4. Work with a realtor who knows physician relocation—they can help with off-market opportunities and timing your move.

Checklist Essentials

  1. Forward your mail and update subscriptions
  2. Transfer prescriptions and medical records
  3. Set up utilities and internet
  4. Research schools or childcare if applicable
  5. Pack strategically with a moving checklist

Resources for Relocating Physicians

I’ve created tools to make moving easier:

  1. After Match Day Checklist: Step-by-step actions for your first weeks in a new city
  2. Moving Day Checklist: Organize everything from packing to utilities
  3. Nashville Physician Relocation Guide: 30 pages of neighborhood insights, hospitals, schools, and local resources.
  4. You can also listen to Episode 3 of Behind the White Coat, where we break down what to do after Match Day, including how to research your new city, create a realistic relocation budget, navigate the rent versus buy decision, and build connections before you arrive.
  5. Join our Facebook community for physicians’ spouses, a space to share stories, ask questions, and make friends.

These resources are perfect for physicians relocating to Nashville, residents, fellows, and their families.

Match Day is exciting, stressful, and full of “what ifs.” My advice: celebrate your achievement, embrace the adventure, and build your support system early. The city, program, and hospital are important—but your community and the people around you will make the experience memorable.
